A thoughtful piece which reminds us that, even in defeat, all is never lost. As a nation we've always had to learn to live with adaptations and compromises we once thought intolerable. So long as these contribute to a creative synthesis, rather than a long, sterile retreat, we can take pride in our work as principled conservatives.
Russel Kirk wrote movingly, and hopefully, of the task Toqueville set himself as he turned to "...the weary and unromantic necessity of reconciling old values with new faiths - the conservative function, so much derided, so difficult to execute, quite indispensable to the survival of civilization."
